Hawkins Repeats As MEGA 100 Champion. Hawkins, Cline, & Strickler Grab Feature Wins!
(Middlebourne, WV) – The Renegades of Dirt Modified Tour presented by Arizona Sport Shirts returned to the Bullring last weekend for the biggest modified event in the East, the 2nd Annual Modified “MEGA 100”! The Tyler County Speedway roared to life with over fifty unique competitors signing in over the course of three days from ten states. The event featured three action packed complete shows with $4,000 to the winner nightly and a passing points format that provided some of the best racing we’ve seen all season. Action so intense event Fox Sports wanted a piece of it on Friday night as Hawkins and Strickler tangled coming to the line.
The weekend got underway on Thursday with Lance Elson coming from seventh to win the first heat race. It immediately set the tone for the races to come. Thursday nights feature was lead to the green by Lance Elson who would continue his current hot streak at the speedway and set sail for the first ten laps. Meanwhile, Hawkins was making his move to the front and reeled in the leader as the pair ran side by side. It wasn’t until lap twenty-five when Jacob Hawkins would take the lead with a move to the inside of Elson in turn #3. The pass would eventually seal the opener for the Fairmont, WV native who was followed to the stripe by Kyle Strickler, Lance Elson, Jesse Wisecarver, and RJ Otto rounding out the top five.
On Friday night race teams once again drew starting spots and battled it out over five heat races and two B-Mains to determine the feature lineup for the second night of the ‘MEGA 100’. It was two modified hot shoes making up the front row with Jacob Hawkins and Jesse Wisecarver. Hawkins grabbed the point and would set a torrid pace around the “Bullring”. The weekend’s double file restart procedures also added to the intrigue as competitors battled for real estate in every corner.
Two and three wide action was top to bottom on the perfectly manicured ¼ mile oval with Kyle Strickler getting by Wisecarver and applying serious pressure to Hawkins at the races midway point. On lap #18 Strickler would make an aggressive bid for the lead in turn #3 and take the point with Hawkins tight to the cushion trying to retake the lead. The leaders would get the white flag and bear down on lapped traffic as they headed down the back stretch. As the duo entered the final turn the lapped car would take away Stricklers line forcing the trio to make contact at out of four. The contact would send the Harris Auto Racing #8 spinning across the line to take the win in reverse as the entire crowd was on their feet for the movie style moment.
The stage was set on Saturday night for the epic weekend conclusion with Strickler and Hawkins coming into the night tied in overall weekend points. Five intense heat races were witnessed including side by side shootouts between Del Cunningham and Travis Dickson, Kyle Strickler and DJ Cline, Jason Brookover and Colton Burdette, among others. Following two B-Mains the twenty-five car starting field rolled out for the famous pre-race ceremonies featuring no track lights, light sticks, spot lights, fireworks, and more. Colton Burdette and Jason Brookover would lead the field to the green. Burdette took the top spot with great racing through the pack as the laps continued.
By the races midway point Taylor Cook of Stanley, NC had made his march from 10th to reel in the top cars and eventually make the pass for the lead. However, with ten to go heartbreak hit the Cook camp. A flat tire ended his career biggest win campaign relinquishing the lead to DJ Cline. In the final moments of the race it was Cline and Derrick Ramey who would duel for the win while Hawkins from the tail due to an early caution had worked his way back to a podium position. When the checkered fell it was St. Clairsville, OH veteran DJ Cline who would play Cinderella to clinch his biggest career modified win and his first ever Renegade of Dirt win aboard his 2Brothers Motorsports Shaw and Cline Sweeper Service #4DJ entry.
The overall weekend “MEGA 100” championship would go to Jacob Hawkins of Fairmont, WV as he repeats as the event winner. Hawkins used 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place finishes to put himself into back to back ‘MEGA 100’ championships. For complete on-demand video of all the action visit www.pitrow.tv or www.racefeedx.com.
